The brief was one line long: hold the stone with as little as possible. Six drawings and four years later the claw reached its final section — 0.9 mm at the base, tapering to 0.4 mm at the tip, thinner than anyone in the workshop believed would hold.
It has held for sixty-four years. We have never altered the drawing, and the setter who makes it today learned it from the setter who made the first.
